Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about eSIM for European travel

Basics

What is an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital SIM card embedded in your device. Instead of inserting a physical card, you download a carrier profile by scanning a QR code. It works exactly like a regular SIM but without the physical component.
How do I know if my phone has eSIM?
Go to Settings → Cellular (iPhone) or Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (Android). If you see an option to "Add eSIM" or "Add Cellular Plan", your device supports eSIM. See our device guide for a full list.
Can I use eSIM and my regular SIM at the same time?
Yes. Most modern smartphones support dual SIM — one physical SIM and one eSIM active simultaneously. You can use your home SIM for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data in Europe.
Is eSIM safe and secure?
Yes. eSIM uses the same security standards as physical SIM cards, plus additional protections. Profiles are cryptographically signed by the GSMA's secure infrastructure. The embedded chip is tamper-resistant.

Plans & Data

How much data do I need for a European trip?
For a 1–2 week trip with moderate use (maps, browsing, occasional video calls): 5–10GB. For heavy use including frequent video calls and streaming: 15–20GB. Download offline maps and content on Wi-Fi to reduce usage significantly.
What countries should I verify are covered?
Always verify: Switzerland, Norway, Iceland (not EU), UK (post-Brexit), Turkey, and the Western Balkans. These are commonly excluded from "European" plans that focus on EU countries. Check the provider's country list explicitly.
Can I use my eSIM as a hotspot?
Most eSIM plans permit hotspot/tethering, but verify before purchasing. Some plans restrict hotspot or throttle it separately. If you need reliable hotspot for laptop work, confirm this is explicitly permitted in the plan terms.
What happens when my data runs out?
Your connection is throttled to a lower speed (typically 128–512 kbps). You can usually purchase a top-up through the provider's app. Set data alerts in your phone settings to avoid unexpected throttling.

Activation & Setup

When should I activate my eSIM?
Activate 1–2 days before departure on a stable Wi-Fi connection. This ensures the profile is fully installed and you can troubleshoot any issues before traveling. Some plans only activate when you arrive in the coverage region.
My eSIM isn't connecting. What do I do?
1) Check eSIM is set as active data line. 2) Enable Data Roaming for the eSIM. 3) Toggle Airplane Mode off and on. 4) Manually select a network in Settings. 5) Restart device. 6) Contact provider support with your order number.
Can I transfer my eSIM to a new phone?
eSIM profiles are device-specific. When changing phones, contact your provider to request a new profile for the new device. Most providers do this at no charge. A factory reset will also delete your eSIM profile.
